The colour and texture of the forest floor provided inspiration for the choice of office floor covering.

Shinrin-Yoku (SY) and psychoanalysis are aesthetically compatible – for both, the physical environment has a direct effect on consciousness. Specifically, SY is a philosophical approach that introduces ‘nature’ (with its implied sense of impermanence) into interior living and work spaces. Natural materials become structural elements of a SY – psychoanalytic space. These elements may be heard, seen, touched – even earthy aromas replicated – and all of these undifferentiated from memory, cognition and sensation.

“The practice of Shinrin-Yoku assisted by trained nature and forest therapy guides leads individuals into a ‘liminal’space. In this liminal space, also known as an ‘in-between’ human state or ‘suspended state of partial knowing,’ the healing properties associated with SY are purportedly activated. During the liminal phase, a person integrates, discards and experiences an ‘ontological shift’ and then experiences ‘transformation’ and a ‘changed discourse’, known as a ‘post-liminal phase.’ The individual may experience a ‘pre-liminal’ space in nature and may vacillate between old and emergent thoughts that may be disruptive. However, once in the liminal psychological space, the individual experiences a sense of calm and mastery. The immersion into nature may lead to a transformative way of knowing and understanding the self. These noteworthy concepts may serve as foundations for future research studies”.
Hansen et. al. (2017) Shinrin-Yoku and Nature Therapy: A State-of-the-Art Review.

aims to evoke the liminality of SY’s environmental ambience and introduce it, as an undemanding aural companion, into the psychoanalytic space.

A plush, silk-based pile carpet was selected for the office to evoke the texture and phosphorescence of a forest floor. The carpet has a soft, velvety appearance and uneven grain which creates a distinctive sheen when in use. The pile is short and slightly knotted. It has the texture of velvet or velour which rewards users who have happily agreed to remove footwear upon entering.
